Daughters of Our Lady of the Sacred Heart

What is a vocation?

A vocation is a call. The call of God rooted in our baptism is a call to Holiness to all of us in the different ways of life we have chosen whether it is single life, married life, consecrated life, (sisters and brothers) or the ordained ministry (priests). Each vocation is a call to follow Christ closely. It is God who puts the desire in our hearts to know where He wants us to live our life fully. We can know God’s call through prayer, time and our lives experiences.

When we talk about vocation, we introduce a vertical dimension in our life, which is God. It is no longer ‘what do I prefer?' but rather ‘What does God want me to be?" A vocation is not something that you can switch like a profession or a career. For someone who has chosen the consecrated life, their path of following Christ is through their vows of chastity, poverty and obedience. They are called to live as Christ lived; to model their lives on the life of Jesus- chaste, poor and obedient - making their hearts more free for prayer and service.

The basis of our desire to find and to do the will of God should be the belief that God's will for us is our only chance to be truly and lastingly happy.
